This is something I really wish I knew more about. That being pregnant can affect your teeth. I was really shocked at the number of hits I got when I was Googling this, after I was in a miserable condition because of the toothache. And this post is about my pregnancy toothache woes!
Because of constant vomiting and hormones, your teeth can be a real pain. Trust me, I know. I woke up one night in such horrid pain that I was screaming and wailing while tossing around in my bed. I was scared that the neighbours would come. My face felt like it had been punched! My eyes, cheeks, ears, everything was on fire!
What shocked me was the fact that many dentists refuse to do anything with you. Because you are pregnant.
So although there are even antibiotics which are safe for you, most dentists will just point blank refuse. I had to go back and forth between my dentist and gyno for a week before any dental work was done. I had to get a referral from my gyno allowing my dentist to treat me.
The first time I went to the dentist, I was sent away with only Panadol. I wanted to pull out my hair as I was beyond depressed and in so much pain. In fact, some of the ladies on the many forums said that they’d rather give natural birth again than go through toothache.
Even with a referral, most dentists cannot do much. Because they cannot use an X-ray as the radiations are harmful for the baby. So, the best they can do is give temporary fillings which means you might end up visiting your dentist a few times over the course of your pregnancy.
So brush, use mouthwash, and floss everyday. Twice at least. You do not want to wake up in the middle of night wailing.
And worst case scenario: stock up on clove oil.
I hope you don’t have to suffer through any pregnancy toothache woes!
